3 Misconceptions About SEO: What You Really Need to Know

If you have ever searched anything on Google, you know that you can get a LOT of results. (Google used to tell you how many results you received and how long it took!). And if you are looking up reviews or searching for more information about something then you know that you can also get a lot of opinions, a lot of DIFFERING opinions.

As a small business owner, you may have looked up how to get more people to your website. In other words: SEO. Search Engine Optimization. (Or as I like to say: People are Searching Everywhere Online.)

And there are a lot…a LOT of opinions on SEO. And some of the things you hear are myths or misconceptions.

Today we are going to look at 3 Common SEO Misconceptions and set the record straight, so you can really grow your business!

Misconception 1: SEO Takes a Long Time

One of the most persistent myths is that SEO is a waiting game. In fact, most would say that SEO is going to take a minimum of 3 months.

Yes, SEO is a long-term investment, but that doesn’t mean you can’t start to get some benefits sooner.

Think of SEO as a long-term game or like planting a garden: while some seeds take time to flourish, others sprout quickly with the right care.

So, what are some ways you can get some quick results?

Quick Tips for Faster Results:

  • Optimize Existing Content: Refresh outdated blog posts with new information and relevant keywords.
  • Improve Website Speed: A faster site enhances user experience and can boost your rankings.
  • Engage in Local SEO (if you are a Local Business): By targeting geographically relevant keywords, you can see quicker results in local searches

These early wins provide immediate benefits and lay the groundwork for sustainable growth, turning your SEO strategy into a powerful tool for business success.

But I must be honest. Sometimes we try to get quick results, and more quick results. And more. And so we trade quick results for long-term results. We need to make sure that our quick wins are leading to long-term results.

Misconception 2: Paid Ads Ranking Affects Organic Search Ranking

O Paid Ads….You either like them or hate ‘em…or wonder if they will work for you.

The relationship between paid ads and organic rankings is often misunderstood. “If I get more clicks on the ads that will help my (organic) search rankings!”

The reality? Paid and organic searches are like two sides of a coin—related but independent.

So sure Ads can help people to your website, but, going back to point 1, if your on-page SEO (and content in general) are not good or irrelevant, people will leave and that does not help your organic ranking.

The Truth About Paid Ads and SEO:

One way to tackle this and remember is that Ads are really to help you measure and understand conversion, which can then help you to pinpoint your keywords better for your organic ranking. This can be a good (although costly) idea to help your organic rankings increase.

Misconception 3: There is Only One ‘Right’ Way to Do SEO

SEO isn’t a one-size-fits-all strategy.

Even though that is what people, gurus, influencers, agencies may tell you.

Bad news: There is not 1 way to do SEO.

The Good news?: There is not 1 way to do SEO.

Why do I say that is both good and bad? Well, you may be thinking why is this not working? I am doing this thing someone said…

But the thing is that SEO is always evolving. So too must your strategies and tactics.

And some of the things they tell you are not going to work for you in your industry.

We need to remember that while strategies and tactics may change, it is more important to stay in tune with foundational SEO practices, such as keywords, backlinks, meta tags etc…

And also, while foundational practices like keyword optimization and high-quality content are important, the specifics can and should change based on your industry and target audience.

How You can Adapt Your SEO Strategy:

  • Tailor Your Approach: Consider your industry and business’s unique needs and audience when developing your SEO plan.
  • Stay Flexible: SEO is constantly evolving; what worked yesterday might not work today. Keep experimenting with new strategies and adapt to changes in algorithms. What may work for industry A may not work with Industry C.

If you have ever watched the NBA and seen some of the crazy shots and moves they do, the reason they are able to do that is because they have mastered the fundamentals at a basic level and built on those skills. Only after they have taken millions of shots and fine tuned how they dribble and run and shoot, do they start to branch out and do they fancy stuff.

Same thing with us with SEO. We have to make sure that we are doing the fundamentals of SEO. And then by doing that and making sure we have those down we can start some other ‘crazy’ tactics.

Final Thoughts

Let’s look at the three common SEO misconceptions: SEO takes a long time, paid ads affect organic rankings, and there’s only one right way to do SEO. While there’s some truth to each, it’s not as simple as it seems.

Yes. Good, long-term SEO takes time, but there are ways you can get some quick wins/low-hanging fruit.

Paid ads may help more people get to your website, but if your on-page SEO is not well thought out, once your ads go away, so does your traffic.

Lastly, while you can try ‘crazy’ or trending stuff, foundational SEO is where you need to start, if your base isn’t strong the structure will fall.

Remember, SEO success comes from getting quick wins and adjusting and looking ahead to get long-term gains. Start with small, actionable steps—like refreshing your content or improving site speed—to see immediate benefits that pave the way for long-term gains.

While SEO can be scary and confusing, it isn’t just a fancy term; it’s a key part of how you reach people online (Remember: People are Searching Everywhere Online).
