Listen: SEO is dead.

Also, Long Live SEO!

However, if you are still relying only on keyword strategy to get leads for your business, you are about to get left behind.

People aren’t just Googling anymore. Specifically they are not just doing keyword search.

They’re asking AI full questions, that are detailed. And here is the thing: If your business isn’t showing up in those answers, you’re missing out.

Look, I still believe in Google. They still send 96-98% more traffic than anyone else. They’re still number one.

(And who is #2? Well, just keep reading)

Everyone is talking about AI Overviews and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), but what it really boils down to is that the way your potential clients search for you has evolved.

We’ve gone from keywords (“roofer Austin”) to key phrases (“metal roofer near Austin”) to long-tail, conversational questions (“Who does metal roofing for farmhouses near Austin, Texas?”).

And the crazy part? Google’s been preparing us for this for a few years. You know that “People Also Ask” section on Google? That’s basically what AI overviews are doing now.

Why This Matters for Your Business

AI optimization isn’t about ranking in the top 10 blue links anymore.

(Read that again: AI Optimization)

I mean, that still matters. But now it’s also about answering real questions people are asking.

Think about how people find businesses now. It’s not a straight line. They don’t just visit your website and book a call.

It’s more like a basketball game. The best teams don’t just throw the ball down the court and shoot. They pass it around 2, 3, 4, 5 times before taking the shot.

Your customers do the same thing.

They check Google.
Then your social media.
Maybe your YouTube.
They look at Yelp.

They’re bouncing around before they ever contact you.

So, let’s look at some ways we can improve our presence online.

1. Target Long-Tail, Conversational Questions aka Answer the questions that people are asking.

Remember that basketball analogy I used earlier?

Your prospects are doing the exact same thing. They are bouncing around trying to figure out if you actually know what you’re doing before they ever pick up the phone.

So make it easy for them

Start simple. What are the 5-10 questions people ask you before they become a client?

Write those down.

Now answer them. Not just on your website. Everywhere.

Make short videos. 30-second clips work great. Put them on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook.

Answer one question per video. Make it quick and helpful.

If you’re a roofer, maybe make a comparison chart. Show the different types of roofs. List what people should think about before choosing.

AI picks up on stuff like that.

AI engines love structured data like charts and will pull them directly into search overviews.

2. Optimize Off-Site (SEO Means “Searching Everywhere Online”)

You don’t have to be everywhere. But wherever you show up, make it count.

A website is your foundation, but it’s only one piece of the puzzle. AI overviews pull from the entire internet, which means you need to be answering those 5 to 10 questions off your website, too.

Remember I mentioned the #2 most popular website?

YouTube. And guess who owns YouTube?
Google!

Imagine people are looking for an answer on Google…and you show up. On Google AND YouTube.

Start putting quick, 30-second videos on YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, LinkedIn and your Google Business Profile EVERYWHERE.

If you are doing a podcast, talk about those questions.

You DON’t HAVE to be on every single platform, but wherever you choose to plant your flag, you need to show up consistently and answer the questions your buyers are actually asking.

Remember: SEO means “search everywhere online.” People are searching in a lot of places. Not just Google.

3. Lean Hard into E-E-A-T

AI search visibility still relies heavily on SEO fundamentals. Google and AI engines use a framework called E-E-A-T: Experience, Expertise, Authority, and Trustworthiness.

Sounds fancy. But it’s simple.

If your website is just copying and pasting generic industry fluff, AI won’t recommend you. BUT….

If you have an actual opinion….Show your experience by talking in a conversational tone….Answer questions directly, all while injecting your unique point of view, and writing for people not the algorithm, you will show Google you are a real person and answering real questions.

I will say it again: AI SEO is just really good SEO. And even further than that: Good AI SEO is really good long-tail keyphrase SEO.

If you answer the questions your clients are asking, and you do it with authority across multiple platforms, you will win the traffic.

The Bottom Line

Doesn’t matter what you call it, AI SEO, GEO, AEO BINGO…AI Search is here to stay.

And evolve.

Just like SEO.

But the good news? It’s not some brand new skill you have to learn!

Remember: AI SEO is really just good SEO. Specifically, it’s good long-tail keyword SEO. (I feel like I said this already….;) )

So recap:
Answer the questions people are asking.
Do it on your website and off your website.
Show your expertise.
Be helpful and conversational.

And dominate search in ALL its forms.
